Yesterday was the Halloween celebration at our compound. It started with a party in the picnic area, then was to continue with "staff led" trick-or-treating. Unfortunately, as seems to be the trend with Tomson, it ended up being a rainy day.
They had a better turn out than I would have expected for the party, which consisted of 2 games, bracelet making, and a food table with several unidentifiable items. All activites were conducted in Mandarin, as our compound has a high population of local, high income, Chinese families.
The trick-or-treating portion of the afternoon was started 40 minutes earlier than scheduled, and I am assuming this was due to the weather. Our compound is very large, and not everyone would want to participate in this western tradition (I am surprised at how many local families did), so families that wanted to pass out candy were to put a pumpkin on their porch.
We had purchased a large bag of Dove chocolates (maybe 100), a large bag of suckers (50ish), and a large bag of M & M's (again, probably about 50). Each child received only one, as we were not sure how many children to expect. Quite surprisingly, there were A LOT of kids, and needless to say.....our pumpkin got pulled into the house early. We actually had more children come to our door in Shanghai, than we did in several years put together in the states.
The kids had a nice time, although Carleigh pooped out after about six houses. We hopped into our neighbor's car, which was close by, and he took us home. Brennan stuck with some friends, and made the long trek around the compound.
Carleigh really enjoyed passing out the candy when we returned home, and was happy to get off her wet costume, and into her favorite attire, pajamas. Winners, for me, in the costume category, were the four year old asian Snow White, and her 16 month old brother, The Crab....Too cute!
