Friday was field day for Brennan's class. It lasted all day, and was a hot, soupy day in Shanghai. Each child was dressed in the t-shirt for their "house." There are four houses, just like in Harry Potter, but they are called, Bears, Pumas, Falcons, and Brennan's house, Dolphins. The school puts all children from the same household, in the same house, so as not to cause family grief. So Ethan is also a Dolphin, and Carleigh will be a Dolphin next year when she starts.
The theme of field day was "Olympics" for obvious reasons, and they did a cute parade and torch relay to start the day. Each class represented a country or area, and Brennan's class represented the European Union. The only event that was done as a "House" competition was the Tug of War, so everything else was done with their classmates. Other events were Three Legged Soccer, Chariot Races, Shark Attack, Baskets of Hope (every basket made was rewarded a 1 rmb donation to cyclone and earthquake victims.), Sponge Pass, Flip it, Obstacle Course, Water Squirters, Bouncy Castle, Buddy Walk, and Track and Field. I volunteered to help and was stationed at the Three Legged Soccer, although I was able to step away to take pictures of Brennan's class. It was a lot of fun and I was exhausted when I got home, just in time to start a few hours of Mandarin lessons!
Saturday, I went out with Wen, Bill's Chinese Aussie coworker. She just moved here for a temporary (6 month) assignment, and we went shopping in the hottest shopping district in Shanghai, then went to Carrefour to stock her kitchen. It was fun, and she is a shopper, like me, so we get along very well.
Shanghai is all about the night life, so the crowds pick up in the evening, and as we walked back to Mr. Tao we watched an older Chinese couple dancing in the Plaza, as a crowd gathered around them. Warming my heart to our host country and the people that live here.
