It is Chinese New Year time here. In the stores, it plays out much like Christmas. Lots of crowds. Everyone is shopping for gifts, buying decorations, and holiday food. Children are happy for an upcoming vacation from school. You can see the joy in the Chinese children's faces, holiday time joy. My kids have that "we are so lucky" look in their faces, as another 10 day vacation nears. In March, they will have another week off. Tough.
For Chinese New Year's Eve, we have booked a river view room downtown at the Shangri-La. We want to take in the festivities. Besides dinner, there will be fireworks all over Shanghai, all night long. The Chinese people will be scaring away the evil spirits. If we are going to be up all night, we might as well enjoy it. The room has a full wall of glass. I believe we will be able to watch the fireworks from anywhere in the room. We will bring in the Year of the Ox, in style.
Today, I had to go to Carrefour to buy a blender. We recently purchased a cookbook which is in Chinese and English, so Yuan-Yuan is going to make pumpkin soup. She knows Bill loves pumpkin. On my way up to the store, I saw a Chinese toddler. At this time of year, they have multiple layers of clothing on. The finally layer is usually a heavily quilted top and bottom set. They look like little Asian marshmallow men. But, when the child turned around he had "split pants" on. Through every layer of clothing, there was a slot from front to back for going potty. This is common here, no diaper, bare butt. My question is......what is the point in all the layers of clothing, when you are going to leave the poor child swinging in the breeze? Maybe they should think of installing a zipper on that final layer!
